Travel Illnesses

When travelling you abroad you are more likely to be exposed to bacteria and viruses that can cause illnesses like diarrhoea and vomiting. It is also possible that you will suffer from travel sickness caused by long journeys on ferries, buses or in cars.

The most common travel illnesses are travel sickness and diarrhoea.

Travel Sickness, also known as motion sickness, often occurrs during long journeys. Caused by a mix up of signals from both the inner ear and eyes, travel sickness can cause feelings of nausea and headaches. A common medication used to treat travel sickness is Cyclizine Hydrochloride. When used before a journey it can help to negate feelings of nausea.

Another common condition for overseas travellers is a bacterial infection. Often stemming from contaminated food or water, these bacterial infections can cause diarrhoea, rashes and nausea. Antibiotics are commonly used to combat these infections by killing the bacteria responsible for the infection.

In most cases medication is able to relieve the symptoms of these travel illnesses, but in cases where conditions do not improve, a doctor should be seen immediately.
